USB flash drive ส่วนรูปแบบการเก็บข้อมูลแบบหนึ่งใน "USB mass storage device class" โดยที่ USB mass storage device จะมีด้วยกันหลายแบบ ได้แก่

1. external magnetic hard drives
2. external optical drives, including CD and DVD reader and writer drives
3. portable flash memory devices, particularly keydrives
4. adapters bridging between standard flash memory cards and a USB connection
5. digital cameras
6. digital audio players (MP3 players, e.g. iAudio, iPod and Creative Labs MuVo series)
7. high-end hardware media players

โดยที่ USB flash drive ถือว่าเป็น portable flash memory devices, particularly keydrives นั้นเอง โดยที่มันมีการเชื่อมต่อแบบ USB 1.1 หรือ USB 2.0 (USB 1.0/1.1 มีความเร็วที่ 1.5 Mbps หรือ 12 Mbps และ USB 2.0 ที่ 480Mbps) ซึ่งสามารถเก็บข้อมูลได้มากถึง 64GB (ณ.วันที่ 3 พ.ค. 49) โดยใช้งานได้แบบไม่ต้องลง Driver ตั้งแต่ Windows ME และ 2000 เป็นต้นมา โดยใช้ชื่อรวมๆ ว่า "USB Mass Storage devices" โดยมักถูกเรียกในชื่อหลายๆ แบบตามแต่ที่ผู้ผลิตจะตั้งได้ เช่น "pen drives", "chip sticks", "thumb drives", "flash drives", "USB keys" และ "handdy drive" เป็นต้น

โดยในปัจจุบัน มักมีระบบรักษาข้อมูลชั้นสูงขายด้วย หรือเรียกว่า encrypted filesystem นั้นเอง โดยมักถูกเรียกว่า TrueCrypt, CryptoBuddy, Private Disk และล่าสุดคือ Lexar JumpDrive Secure โดยจะเป็นการเข้ารหัสไฟล์ไม่ให้ถูกเข้าถึงหรือใช้งานได้ ถ้าไม่รู้รหัสผ่าน โดยในปี 2005 ได้มีการจำหน่ายมาพร้อมกับ biometric fingerprinting หรือระบบแสกนนิ้วมือด้วย
